Herniated Disc

  • directions_boat Local

Your spine is made up of 24 individual bones known as vertebrae. In between each vertebra there is an intervertebral disk, which is a strong small disc with a softer center encased within a tougher exterior. These spinal discs act as a shock absorber, they are pliable and cushioned allowing for bending, twisting and shock-absorption.

A herniated disc occurs when the contents of the center of the disc pushes out through the tougher outer disc wall, into the spinal canal. Which can irritate the disc wall, spinal cord

or nearby spinal nerves resulting in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg.

Some conditions associated with this are sciatica, lumbar herniated disc, and cervical herniated disc. Other than the fact that a herniated disc can be extremely painful, can affect your mood, your activity level, and will inhibit your lifestyle.

What Are The Symptoms?

When a disc is herniated the symptoms may vary, the surrounding nerves can become irritated and inflamed, with symptoms of pain and weakness in the affected areas, which may include arm or leg pain, numbness or tingling, muscular weakness or spasms, chronic pain, or difficulty walking.

Herniated discs may have little to no symptoms or pain immediately, depending on its location. Most herniated discs are found in the lower back or lumbar spine, but can also be found in the neck or cervical spine.

How Is A Herniated Disc Diagnosed?

At Precision Pain Medicine – Pain Center NY we focus on permanently treating the root cause of the pain. In most cases a physical examination, medical history, and a review of the specific symptoms are the main ways a herniated disk is diagnosed.

If another condition is suspected a detailed analysis may be recommended including a neurological exam to check your motor responses and reflexes, or imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scan, or MRI.
